Mother went to Santa Ana High with Claire Walters. I grew up at the Orange County Airport in the 40s and 50s. My dad learned to install auto-pilots from Mr Lear. He had just invented them. My dad worked for Martin Aviation. I miss flying so much. Passed the FAA exam and was ready for flying lessons when my husband was injured on the Long Beach waterfront and retired.

Margaret was also my flight instructor in 1966, taking me from Private to Commercial, instrument, and finally an IFI. I must admit that as a somewhat self absorbed engineer that I was skeptical about having a woman for a flight instructor. However, in short order Margaret demonstrated her high order capability as an aviator. It wasn't until we started the instrument training that my math abilities began to catch up with and pass hers. There would be few others I would rather have in either the right or left seat in a tight spot. She was one of a kind. Her friend, Fran Berra, another high order aviator, gave me my instrument check ride. That was well over 40-years ago now and I'm still kicking...testament enough to their skills. P.T.

Scanning your 99ers web page I saw Margaret Callaway's name. She taught me to fly at Fairfield CA 12/28/53 thru 6/19/54. I took my Pvt Night Xcnty in her C140. Later she used the prop from my C140 in an 99 race.I still have my first log book, I still fly and will all ways remember you Margaret. Elton
